Caroline M. Tanner earned her MD at Loyola University and completed a residency in neurology and fellowship in clinical neuropharmacology and movement disorders at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, where she was an associate professor of neurological sciences until joining the Parkinson's Institute in 1990. She was awarded a PhD in environmental toxicology and epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley.

Tanner has published two textbooks and a videotext, and has authored and co-authored over 150 articles and research papers on the topics of treatment, natural history, epidemiology, and etiology of various movement disorders. Her current areas of research focus include Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Tourette Syndrome and multiple system atrophy. She currently is chair of the movement disorders section of the American Academy of Neurology and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation.
