Outta time. Introducing the 2011 Nike Mag Shoes.
For 22 years they existed only in the year 2015 on Marty McFly’s feet.
Nike finally made them a reality.
Famed Nike designer Tinker Hatfield and footwear innovator Tiffany Beers returned to recreate the footwear legend. Based on an original movie prop used in Back to the Future Part II, the 2011 Nike MAG shoes were rebuilt to the exact specifications of the originals.
It features an electroluminescent outsole, space-age materials and a rechargeable internal battery good for 3,000 hours. And while they are not recommended for playing sports, these highly limited shoes will very likely command attention wherever they are worn.
From September 8 - September 18, 2011, 1500 pairs of Nike MAG shoes were auctioned on eBay to benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. An astonishing $4.7 million was raised — which will go straight to the Foundation’s aggressive research programs to help speed a cure for Parkinson’s.
As part of the Brin Wojcicki Challenge, Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, and his wife Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of personal genetics company 23andMe, are matching up to $50 million in funds raised by the Foundation between now and December 31, 2012. The proceeds of the auction will be doubled, bringing the total funds generated to $9.4 million.
“The enthusiasm this project ignited, and the funds and awareness the shoes generated for Parkinson’s research, are both humbling and inspiring,” said Fox. “Our Foundation is truly grateful to Nike for this unique partnership that brought Back to the Future fans, sneakerheads and the PD community together in the quest to eradicate Parkinson’s from the space-time continuum.”
