Developing and Validating Web-Based Clinical Assessments for Parkinson's Disease 2008

03/19/2008

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research is launching Developing and Validating Web-Based Clinical Assessments for Parkinson's Disease to create and test the feasibility of on-line clinical Web assessments that patients can utilize remotely. Web assessments can include various measurements of motor and/or non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) including questionnaires and other approaches incorporating innovative uses of technology for direct assessment of PD in a Web-based format. Awardees are expected to both develop and/or translate clinical assessments into a format that can be utilized by patients remotely through the Internet as well as develop the technological infrastructure that will allow for initial testing of the assessment in small pilot populations of PD subjects.

Ideal applications to develop Web-based clinical assessments will focus on three deliverables:
1) development of assessments to be delivered through the Internet
2) development of the technology infrastructure through which the assessment will be accessed by patients
3) design and implementation of a pilot study to assess the feasibility of the web-based assessments.

Well-structured applications must include the following components:

--Methodologically tailor existing assessments of clinical symptoms or develop new clinical assessments that can be remotely accessed by PD patients through the Internet.
-- Through a well-designed pilot study, test the feasibility (accuracy and reliability) of web-based assessments and compare with more traditional clinical assessment tools
--Incorporate patient input to maximize patient usability. and compliance of assessments.
--Use state- of-the-art technologies to create the infrastructure to test web-based assessments. Utilization of open-source software is required.
--Integrate rigorous clinical trial designs (including statistical power, patient recruitment, etc.) as outlined under Review Criteria.

Applicants may request a project period of up to two years and direct costs appropriate and justifiable for the work proposed, in addition to indirect costs of up to 25 percent of direct costs.

Conference Call

MJFF will hold a 45 minute long conference call on March 31, 2008 at 12:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time to clarify and explain the Developing and Validating Web-Based Clinical Assessments for Parkinson's Disease 2008 program and to answer applicants' questions. To participate in this call, you must RSVP via email to conferencecalls@michaeljfox.org. Participants will receive a reply with call-in details.
