Michael J. Fox Reflects on His First Appearance as "The Daily Show" Comes to an End

Today marks the end of an era — “The Daily Show” airs its last episode after a 16-year run, growing from a fun chat show parody into an influential voice on current events, politics and social trends. In 1999 Jon Stewart took over “The Daily Show” from original host Craig Killborn and set the stage for what would eventually become a nightly rundown of all the stories that flood our news feeds and conversations.

As the show wraps up its final week, The New York Times highlights memorable “Daily Show” moments, featuring anecdotes from some of Jon Stewart’s most notable guests, including his first-ever: Michael J. Fox.

“I don’t remember much about the appearance aside from being a smartass and joking that I’d been there more times than he had,” says Michael. “I knew he was a smart, funny guy. But I had no idea the weight that he’d carry going down the line.”

Michael’s appearance as Stewart’s first guest took place just a few months after sharing his Parkinson’s diagnosis with the world and one year before founding The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
