Sam Fox Going for Record in Fundraising Run/Hike

RWYC Launch Trailer from Sam Fox on Vimeo.

South Kingstown native Sam Fox, 24, plans to run/hike the entire 2,650-mile length of the Pacific Crest Trail in an attempt to break the current speed record of 65 days starting Aug. 25, to raise money for Parkinson's disease awareness.

Fox's goal is to raise $250,000 for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research agenda to find a cure, dedicating this effort to his mother, Lucy Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2000 at age 50 and still lives in South Kingstown.

The endeavor is organized by the foundation Sam Fox has founded, Run While You Can. His training and two-month ordeal on the trail are being recorded by documentary filmmakers Alice Oestreich and Marion Mauran -- the trailer is shown above.

According to Fox, his mother was incredibly active throughout his childhood, traversing trails, ski slopes, and when working around the house and garden. In recent years, as her symptoms have progressed, he says he's seen her ability to do the things she loves decline.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki have issued a $50 million challenge match for all new and increased giving to the Foundation. The challenge is a dollar-to-dollar match, so Fox's efforts have the potential to raise close to half-a-million dollars for Parkinson's research.

And in a new development, every dollar up to $20,000 that Fox raises will be matched by an anonymous corporation during this time period, a spokesman said.
