Chester A. Mathis, PhD

Distinguished Professor of Radiology, Department of Radiology at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Location: Pittsburgh, PA United States

Chester A. Mathis, PhD, is distinguished professor of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Endowed Chair of PET Research. Dr. Mathis has a long-standing interest in applying synthetic radiochemistry techniques to develop radiopharmaceuticals to study biological function in vivo. About 25 years ago, he joined efforts with Dr. William E. Klunk at the University of Pittsburgh to successfully develop Pittsburgh Compound-B (PiB) to non-invasively assess amyloid-beta plaque load in the brains of living humans. Dr. Mathis has been awarded the 2004 MetLife Foundation Award, the 2008 Potamkin Award from the American Academy of Neurology, the 2009 Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Award from the Alzheimer’s Association, the 2009 Kuhl-Lassen Brain Imaging Award, and the 2010 Paul C. Aebersold Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine for amyloid-beta plaque imaging. Dr. Mathis is currently working on agents to image alpha-synuclein deposits in Parkinson’s disease tau deposits in non-Alzheimer’s disease tauopathies.
