Willem obtained a MSc degree in biomedical sciences from Utrecht University, and an Executive MBA degree from NIMBAS / Bradford University. He began his professional career in clinical research at Glaxo and joined Genzyme in 1994 with responsibility for post-registration clinical trials for a rare genetic disease in Europe. Willem subsequently worked as area manager with sales & marketing responsibility in the Benelux and since 2000 he led and developed the European Marketing function at Genzyme. Towards the end of 2003 he assumed global responsibility for marketing in the rare genetic disease business unit in Genzyme’s worldwide headquarters in Cambridge, MA. Early 2006 Willem moved back to his home country to fully focus on leading the Genzyme Netherlands organization in Naarden. He joined to-BBB as CEO in 2009.
