Dr. Irene Litvan is the Tasch Endowed Professor of Neurology and director of the Parkinson Disease and Other Movement Disorder Center of Excellence at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She has led multicenter and international efforts to develop clinical and neuropathologic diagnostic criteria for Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related disorders, to identify biomarkers and therapies and to conduct epidemiologic and genetic studies. She was awarded the NIH Merit Award and American Academy of Neurology Movement Disorder Research Award and is among the top 1% of most cited researchers worldwide by Web of Science 2019-2020. She developed two centers that were designated Parkinson Foundation Centers of Excellence, one of which (at UCSD) was also designated Research Center of Excellence in Lewy Body Dementia and a Cure PSP Center of Care. Dr. Litvan and many of the center’s faculty and staff speak Spanish, which aids in patient care and evaluation.
