Dr. Charlene Warres Bayer, PhD, obtained her BS in chemistry from Baylor University and her MS/PhD in synthetic organic chemistry from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. After receiving her MS, she studied antibiotic structure and separation at Smith Kline Corporation before returning to Emory University for her PhD. She led a research group at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) for over 30 years focusing on air analyses and the impact of exposure on diseases such as asthma. For the last 10 years, she has pioneered the use of breath analysis as a means to non-invasively distinguish between different types of cancers. In 2011, Dr. Bayer retired from GTRI to found Hygieia Sciences LLC to commercialize breath technology as a screening, point-of-care technology for disease detection and to track disease progression.
