Piet Herdewijn, PhD

Full Professor at KU Leuven - Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry

Location: Leuven Belgium

The Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry has carried out drug discovery research for the past 30 years. From a therapeutic standpoint, the lab's main interests include the fields of virology, bacteriology and immunology. More recently, this focus was expanded to include neurosciences. The lab's expertise is situated in organic chemistry, structural biology, molecular modeling and biochemistry, with achievements in the discovery of new antiviral and immunosuppressive agents. The lab also focuses on nucleic acid chemistry (the study of organic chemicals) and on the synthesis of novel and drug-like heterocycles (a types of chemical compound). As part of this work, the first selective GAK inhibitors were discovered and published by our group in J. Med. Chem. in 2015.
