Giulio Ruffini, PhD

CEO at Starlab Barcelona SL

Location: Barcelona Spain

Dr. Giulio Ruffini is Starlab's CEO and CTO and Neuroelectrics president. He graduated from UC Berkeley in mathematics and physics and obtained a PhD in theoretical physics from UC Davis/Los Alamos National Lab in 1995. In 2000, he and other partners founded Starlab, a company committed to the transformation of research into technologies with a positive impact through interdisciplinary research and market intelligence. From the beginning, he directed Starlab's research to radar remote sensing, electrophysiology (electrical signaling) technology and data analysis. During the recent EU-funded HIVE project, he and his team developed a new class of hybrid EEG-transcranial stimulation devices capable of controlling stimulation currents in several electrodes. Stemming from that work, he recently led the first demonstration of conscious non-invasive direct brain-to-brain communication. In 2011, he co-founded Neuroelectrics, a Starlab spin-off focusing on a new class of medical neurodevices, including electroencephalogram (measures electrical activity in the brain; EEG) and hybrid EEG-tCS wireless systems). His current interests include machine learning in EEG and non-invasive brain stimulation technologies combined with EEG and other neuroimaging techniques in clinical applications. He collaborates with several teams worldwide to develop multifocal transcranial current stimulation (including tDCS, tACS and tRNS), the coordinated stimulation of several brain targets or brain networks derived from neuroimaging.
