Daniel Weiss, MD, is the leader of the Tübingen Deep Brain Stimulation working group at the Centre for Neurology, Department for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research in Tübingen, Germany. His research focuses on neuromodulation for the treatment of persistent axial symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), such as dysarthria, gait disorders and postural instability. To this end, stimulation of the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) was proposed as a treatment for freezing of gait and is currently being evaluated in a well-designed, large clinical trial. In the past, Dr. Weiss discovered the mechanism of freezing phenomena using recordings of brain and muscle electrical activity in people with Parkinson's.
