Location: Stanford, CA United States

Marion Buckwalter, MD, PhD, is a neurologist and researcher who studies the role of inflammation in dementia and recovery from stroke. Dr. Buckwalter received her undergraduate training at the University of Chicago and then earned her MD and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan. She then completed neurology residency and a two-year clinical fellowship in neurocritical care and stroke at the University of California, San Francisco, and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroinflammation at Stanford University. She currently holds associate professor positions in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences and in the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Buckwalter and her colleagues discovered that after stroke late dementia is caused by adaptive immunity, a particular kind of inflammation. She is currently searching for adaptive immunity biomarkers -- objective measures of disease -- of vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
