Yoon-Seong Kim, MD, PhD, earned his medical degree from Kyung-Hee University Medical College in Seoul, Korea, and he received his PhD in neuroscience from Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences in 2003 under the supervision of Prof. Tong H. Joh. Then, he joined Dr. Beal’s lab in the same institute as a postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Kim went on to join the research faculty as an instructor in 2006 and was promoted to assistant professor in 2009. In 2010, he joined the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Central Florida as assistant professor of neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Kim reported for the first time that Nox1-derived ROS play a key role in the degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway. Currently, his research is expanding to explore the molecular mechanisms governing oxidative stress-mediated epigenetic as well as translational regulation of alpha-synuclein, and its role in mitochondrial functions.
