Niels Okkels, MD, PhD

Niels Okkels is a medical doctor with a PhD in dementia research and an Associate Professor of Neurology and Dementia Research at Aarhus University Hospital. As a clinician-scientist, his research focuses on early disease sub-typing and biomarkers in neurodegenerative disorders. His past research contributed to understanding central and peripheral nervous system changes in Lewy body diseases, including parasympathetic denervation of the pancreas and colon in dementia with Lewy bodies. Currently, he investigates the impact of Alzheimer co-pathology in Lewy body disease, incorporating advanced neuroimaging, neuropsychology, and biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and skin samples.
