Parkinson’s disease is the world’s fastest-growing neurological disease, affecting an estimated 1 million Americans with 90,000 new diagnoses each year. Now is the time to take action to end this disease.
Alongside a nationwide network of advocates, The Michael J. Fox Foundation is urging lawmakers to support two public policy priorities that stand to impact Parkinson's research and care.
Accelerate Federal Investment in Parkinson’s Research
With no way to prevent, stop or slow the disease, Parkinson’s is projected to double globally by 2040. As the number of people living with Parkinson's grows, so does the economic burden on American families and public health systems.
We urge Congress to prioritize and increase research funding at the NIH, as well as the DOD, CDC and VA to meet the urgency and opportunity of this moment in research, alleviate the burden of this disease and provide hope for a cure.
Implement and Fund the National Parkinson’s Project
Signed into law in 2024, the National Plan to End Parkinson's Act authorized the first-ever framework for federal coordination to end Parkinson's disease: the National Parkinson's Project (NPP). Once launched, this initiative has the potential to do more than ever before to better diagnose, treat, prevent and cure Parkinson's.
We ask Congress to urge HHS and the White House to take the vital step of seating the NPP Advisory Council no later than the end of 2025. In addition, we ask Congress to secure the funding needed to launch the NPP and support its essential mission.
