Team Fox Half Time Report: Nicole O'Donnell

Team Fox Half Time Report: Nicole O'Donnell

As the 2014 NYC Half Marathon quickly approaches on March 16, Team Fox checks in with members of our 60-runner team to see how training is coming, what moment they're most looking forward to and what tunes are keeping them inspired to stay strong through their long runs.

Today we're chatting with Team Fox member Nicole O'Donnell (Seaford, NY) who is running her very first half marathon in support of her father-in-law, Kev-O, who lives with Parkinson's. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and motivation with us, Nicole-- best of luck these last few weeks!

What was your inspiration to run the NYC Half Marathon with Team Fox?

I am not a runner by any means; I actually had the mindset that you shouldn’t run unless you were being chased. However, I have been on the sidelines plenty of times cheering others on as they ran in the NYC half and NYC marathon and decided that I wanted to be a part of one – it became an item on my “bucket list.” Running for a cause, especially one that I hold so close to my heart, makes this adventure so much for worthwhile. I am running with Team Fox for my father-in-law who is living with Parkinson's. I am running to raise awareness and money for research. I am running to support the family who has treated me like one of their own from day one. I am running for Kev-O, this one’s for him.

What are you most looking forward to on race day?

Crossing the finish line and feeling a sense of accomplishment. Also, sharing my experience with all of my generous donors who always support me in causes I am passionate about.

What has been your method to survive training through this winter’s ‘Polar Vortex’?

I will be honest; I am not a fan of starring at a TV screen and running in place on an indoor treadmill.  Running outside is a completely different experience and I am willing to bare the cold to prevent training at a gym.  Plus, after the initial numbness goes away, running in this weather can be quit refreshing! I secretly think I am starting to enjoy running. Training has helped re-enforce that when you put your mind to something, you really can accomplish anything!

Do you have any quirky training habits or race rituals you’d like to share?

  1. I always eat a teaspoon of peanut butter before I go out on a run (Why? No idea, but then again, any excuse to eat peanut butter is fine with me!).
  2. Every time I reach a mile mark, I’ve noticed that I thrust my hand in the air like Rocky or something  (I mean really, who do I think I am!?).
  3. On my long runs, I always plan my route so I can pass my father-in-law’s house (my in-laws live a town away). When I pass his house, I am instantly reminded of why I am doing this in the first place and it always gives me a boost of energy and the motivation I need to keep running.

You’re in the final stretch of your weekly long run, what three songs are going to get you to the finish?

I’m a “Today’s Hits” kind of girl…

  1. “Burn” by Ellie Goulding
  2. “Timber” by Kesha and Pitbull
  3. “Who Run the World” by Beyonce
