Dr. Elie Matar is an Australian-trained neurologist, sleep physician, and NHMRC-funded clinician-scientist with subspecialty expertise in sleep medicine, cognitive neurology, and movement disorders. He completed his medical and doctoral training at the University of Sydney, followed by advanced clinical and research fellowships at Cambridge University and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square (UCL, London). Dr. Matar leads an internationally recognized translational research program that integrates neuroimaging, high-density EEG, neuropathology, basic science, and computational modeling to interrogate symptom mechanisms in REM sleep behavior disorder, Parkinson’s disease, and Lewy body dementia (LBD). He is regarded as a leading authority on LBD, directing a research team focused on biomarkers of heterogeneity and disease evolution. His work aims to translate these biomarkers into biological staging frameworks and sensitive progression measures. He holds a Horizon Fellowship at the University of Sydney and practices clinically at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research.
