Jan-Bernd Hövener, PhD

Professor, Head of the Section of Biomedical Imaging and the Molecular Imaging North Competence Center at University of Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel
Location: Kiel Germany

Dr. Jan-Bernd Hövener is a physicist whose work bridges fundamental physical principles with translational biomedical imaging. His scientific focus lies in the development of novel magnetic resonance technologies—ranging from quantum-enhanced and hyperpolarized MR methods to advanced spectroscopic and metabolic imaging—for non-invasive visualization of physiology and metabolism in vivo. By combining expertise in physics, engineering and clinical application, his research aims to expand the diagnostic and mechanistic capabilities of MRI far beyond conventional contrast, enabling new insights into cellular function and disease processes.

Dr. Hövener leads an interdisciplinary research environment that integrates physics, chemistry, biology and medicine, fostering innovation at the interface of basic science and clinical translation. Deeply committed to mentoring and scientific diversity, he actively supports the education of young researchers and the cultivation of a collaborative, international scientific culture.
