Johanna Thunell, PhD, is a research scientist at the Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics and the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on identifying and addressing disparities in dementia risk and care, with an emphasis on both formal and informal caregiving. As an early career investigator, her work has examined methods for measuring diagnosed dementia in Medicare claims data, evaluated the impact of the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit on dementia diagnosis rates, and highlighted racial and ethnic disparities in disease burden and care. More recently, Dr. Thunell works as part of a multidisciplinary team funded by The Michael J. Fox Foundation to develop a tool for estimating the value of disease-modifying therapies for Parkinson’s disease. Across these research areas, her agenda investigates how policies and care structures influence health and economic outcomes for people living with dementia and their caregivers, with a continued emphasis on equity in these outcomes. Dr. Thunell received her PhD in Public Policy and Management from the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.
