For Sonny Whelen, racing has always been about momentum — moving forward, pushing limits and bringing people together around a shared passion. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006, that same drive propelled him into a new role: advocate, fundraiser and committed member of Team Fox.
Like many people newly diagnosed, he searched for information online and was struck by how frightening and isolating it could feel. At a support group, he realized something that stayed with him: many people were facing even greater challenges, often without the support or resources they needed.
For years, Sonny managed Parkinson’s largely on his own, adapting as symptoms progressed and shifted — from tremors to mobility and communication challenges, vivid dreams and uncertainty about what might come next. What he knew for certain was that he didn’t want to hide his diagnosis or wait until Parkinson’s slowed him down. He wanted to stay proactive, informed and engaged.
That mindset made Team Fox a natural fit. Inspired by Michael J. Fox’s openness and the Foundation’s focus on research, biomarkers and better treatments, Sonny began organizing fundraisers right away. Concerts were among his first efforts, followed by golf tournaments, go-karting events, auctions and sweepstakes.
Sonny is the owner of Whelen Engineering and a supporter of Action Express Cadillac Racing Car #31, the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup and Whelen Aerospace Engineering vehicles. Cars across the Mazda MX-5 Cup, NASCAR and IMSA Racing feature the Team Fox logo, along with fire suits and team apparel.
For Sonny, seeing Team Fox represented at tracks across the country is more than branding — it’s another way to spark conversations and keep Parkinson’s research in the spotlight. Over the years, countless individuals have shared their own stories with Sonny, reinforcing his belief that awareness is as powerful as fundraising.
