Podcast: Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, What’s the Connection?

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases — the two most common brain diseases — share some clinical symptoms, and researchers are learning more about what biological characteristics they may share, too.

“There are a lot of common pathways that have been implicated in both,” says Mark Frasier, PhD, vice president of research programs at The Michael J. Fox Foundation. “So there are some common targets that have been explored and are actually candidates for drug development that could be applicable to both.”

Scientists are working together to understand more about Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and develop new therapies.

“The more we learn about the brain, its functions and abnormal functions in these disorders, the more we appreciate that there is so much overlap. And so the ability to collaborate and share information, share data is going to be critical to the success of development of new treatments,” says Frasier.
