Thomas Morel, PhD

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Lead • UCB

Thomas Morel, PhD, is a health outcomes scientist with more than 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from KU Leuven, Belgium. His work focuses on designing patient-relevant endpoints and evidence-generation strategies that meaningfully capture how treatments affect people’s lives and inform regulatory, HTA and clinical decision-making.

Since 2018, Dr. Morel has served as principal investigator of a research program developing novel Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO) instruments for early-stage Parkinson’s disease, in collaboration with Parkinson’s UK, the Parkinson’s Foundation, Parkinson’s Europe and The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. He is an active contributor to the scientific and regulatory-science efforts to optimise the MDS-UPDRS for use in early-stage Parkinson’s clinical trials and to develop patient-focused cognition endpoints for Parkinson’s, all with the shared goal of accelerating drug development.

As a past Industry Chair of the Critical Path for Parkinson’s (CPP) pre-competitive working group on patient-centric endpoints and co-lead of its MDS-UPDRS taskforce, Dr. Morel is a committed advocate of genuine co-creation “with” patients; the PRO project he leads was a finalist for the 2026 PFMD “Made With Patients Awards” in the Best Overall Initiative category. He also brings extensive expertise in rare diseases as an active contributor to the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC).
