Dr. Gijs Kooij is an associate professor at Amsterdam UMC, with a keen focus on bioactive lipid mediators (LMs) in the initiation and resolution of neuro-inflammatory responses. Throughout his academic journey, his primary ambition has been to unravel the secrets of LM-driven endogenous protective mechanisms. He was appointed as Principal Investigator in September 2019 and established his research group on inflammation-resolution mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases, where he published >50 peer reviewed publications (h-index of 35). He is an international expert in the LM field with extensive international collaborations. For example, he is involved in various translational projects including EU-funded Innovative Training Networks like NeuroInflammation, BtRAIN and Entrain. His engagement extends to organizing international conferences as he is the founder, chair and organizer of the first (Hasselt, 2021) and second (Leiden, 2023) and third (Hasselt 2025) Lipid Mediators in Brain Diseases conferences.
