John D. Price, PhD

Vice President, Research and Development at Synthonics Inc.

Location: Blacksburg, VA United States

Dr. Price received his BS degree in chemical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, where his interest in reaction mechanisms and reactor design led eventually to a PhD in physical organic chemistry from Iowa State University. This was followed by a post-doc in the laboratories of Tomas Hudlicky, PhD, at Virginia Tech, where he was engaged in the synthesis of complex natural products involved in phosphoinositide dependent signaling pathways, and where he met Thomas Piccariello, the future president and CSO of Synthonics, Inc. A faculty appointment at the University of Virginia School of Medicine afforded him the opportunity to work in the laboratories of Dr. Joseph Larner, MD, PhD, with particular emphasis on the role of phosphatidylinositol glycans in insulin signaling and diabetes. The pioneering work of Dr. Larner led to the founding of Insmed, Inc., a pharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of therapeutics for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus where Dr. Price was a senior scientist and eventual director of research and development at the spinoff company, Allomed, Inc.

Dr. Price began working at Synthonics in 2006 and is now vice president of research and development where he is responsible for managing the medicinal chemistry and pharmacology departments. He has played a key role in expanding the original concept of metal coordinated pharmaceuticals into the areas of controlled release and buffered intravenous formulations.
