M. Angela Cenci Nilsson, MD, PhD

Professor of Experimental Medical Research at Lund University

Location: Lund Sweden

Angela Cenci Nilsson, MD, PhD, (M. A. Cenci in published papers) obtained a medical degree and clinical specialization in neurology at the University of Verona (Italy) followed by a PhD degree in neurobiology at Lund University (Sweden) under the supervision of Prof. Anders Björklund. At Lund University, Dr. Cenci Nilsson received appointments as assistant professor (1993-2002), associate professor (2002-2008) and professor of experimental medical science (from 2008). Since 2004, she has been heading the Basal Ganglia Pathophysiology Unit at Lund University. Research activities in this laboratory aim at discovering new symptomatic and disease-modifying treatments for Parkinson's and other disorders of the basal ganglia.

Dr. Cenci Nilsson has pioneered the development of pre-clinical models mimicking different features of Parkinson´s disease (in particular, levodopa-induced dyskinesia and akinesia). Her laboratory uses these models to discover mechanisms of disease and new therapeutic approaches. Dr. Cenci Nilsson has received several awards and commissions of trust (including the Erik K. Fernström Award for Young Promising Investigators in 2003; and the Medal of Honours by the Swedish Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in 2006).
