Location: Cagliari Italy

Roberto Frau, PhD, is research assistant professor at the University of Cagliari (Italy). He is a neuropharmacologist and behavioral neuroscientist interested in studying the role of neuroactive steroids in the etiopathogenesis of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. His research is especially focused on identifying novel neurosteroid-based therapeutic targets for brain disorders associated with dysfunctions of the dopaminergic system, including Parkinson’s disease. His findings have contributed to highlight the involvement of neuroactive steroids in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease by showing for the first time that inhibition of the key enzyme implicated in neurosteroids synthesis (i.e., 5-alpha reductase) elicits antidyskinetic effects in animal models of Parkinson’s disease. His current research aims at identifying which neurosteroid(s) is directly responsible of the therapeutic properties of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors to introduce novel neurosteroid-based drugs for the treatment of both motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
