Dr. Kaufman received his BA from Wesleyan University, his PhD from Johns Hopkins University, and completed postdoctoral training at the New England Primate Research Center, where he conducted early research documenting that phenyltropanes can detect the full degree of dopamine nerve terminal degeneration in Parkinson’s disease.  In 2005, he was appointed associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.  He has a long-standing interest in brain disorders of abnormal dopaminergic and glutamatergic function and conducts pre-clinical and clinical research in addiction, psychiatric, and neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Kaufman has co-authored over 60 publications and edited Brain Imaging in Substance Abuse (Humana Press, 2000). He recently was awarded the Jack H. Mendelson Memorial Research Award for outstanding substance abuse research contributions and a NARSAD Independent Investigator Award.
