Intrinsic Remodeling of the Fovea in Parkinson’s Disease

Promising Outcomes of Original Grant:
In the past we determined the part of the retina (the back of the eye) which needs to be measured for PD induced changes. We developed an equation which permits the definition of PD induced changes in the center portion of the retina. We have shown that one variable of the equation distinguishes PD and control subjects. The equation allows one to compare results irrespective of the differences in actual measurements by two, widely available OCT equipments.

Objectives for Supplemental Investigation:
We address the validity of the equation and developed two groups of independent investigators.  The sample size will be double of a previous study. Validating the equation will serve in the future for both cross sectional and longitudinal large scale, multicenter studies in PD.

Importance of This Research for the Development of a New PD Therapy
Changes in the model may serve as an index of the potential effects of different interventions, including pharmaceutical treatments and putative neuro-protective agents in PD.
