Professor Wolfgang Oertel received his medical education at the University of Tübingen and Berlin, Germany and Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. After three years of post-graduate training in neuroscience at the NIH, he completed a PhD in neurology at the Technical University München in 1986. He received further training in translational research in movement disorders before returning to the University of München as an associate professor of neurology. From 1996 to 2014, he was the chairman of Neurology at Philipps University of Marburg. Since 2014, he has held the distinguished Hertie-Senior-Research Professorship.

His research focuses on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, imaging, and pharmacotherapy of Parkinson's disease, atypical parkinson syndromes, Lewy body dementia, REM sleep behavior disorder and pre-clinical models of neurodegenerative diseases. From 2015-2020, he was a member of the Scientific Panel for Health of the European Union and he is currently the vice president of the European Brain Council.
