Ian Ganley, PhD, is a professor in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit at The University of Dundee. He received his bachelors and Master of Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, UK and obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Following postdoctoral work at Stanford University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Ian established his own group at the University of Dundee to understand the molecular regulation of mitophagy – a process that is dysregulated in Parkinson’s disease. His group has elucidated how key kinase complexes, such as ULK1 and AMPK, control mitophagy initiation and progression. They also developed the groundbreaking mito-QC reporter to visualize mitophagy, a tool now widely used across academia and industry. In recognition of his leadership in cell biology, he received the prestigious 2025 Hooke Medal and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
