Manfred Weigele, PhD

Manfred Weigele, PhD, is a chemistry consultant with more than 38 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Dr. Weigele obtained his PhD in organic chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1965. He then joined Hoffmann-La Roche in its Nutley, NJ, facility as a senior research scientist. At Hoffman-La Roche Dr. Weigele rose through the ranks to hold positions including group chief, section chief, associate director of medicinal chemistry from 1971 to 1982; director of anti-infective chemistry from 1982 to 1983; director of medicinal chemistry from 1983 to 1985; and associate vice president and group director of chemistry research from 1985 to 1991. He retired from Roche in 1991 to participate in the founding of Ariad Pharmaceuticals, a Cambridge, MA, biotech company dedicated to the structure-based design of drugs that intervene in critical intracellular signal transduction pathways. He retired as chief scientific officer of Ariad Pharmaceuticals in 1999, but continues to retain a senior advisory role with them. Dr. Weigele is co-author and/or co-inventor of over 100 scientific publications and U.S. patents.
