Mary Kathleen Doherty, PhD, MRSC, CChem

Mary Doherty, PhD, is a protein chemist with nearly 20 years of experience in the characterization and quantification of proteins. She completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Edinburgh and her PhD in enzyme kinetics before moving to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York to undertake post-doctoral research. In 2005, she was awarded a Research Councils United Kingdom (RCUK) Fellowship to study the role of protein breakdown in health and disease at the University of Liverpool, UK. In 2010, she moved to the University of the Highlands and Islands, UK, where she continues her studies of proteins and, specifically, protein- and peptide-based biomarkers of disease. Dr. Doherty has particular interest in the role of proteins in inflammatory disorders and in the link between inflammation within the nervous system and Parkinson's disease.
