Norbert Schuff, PhD

Associate Professor of Radiology at Northern California Institute for Research & Education

Location: San Fransisco, CA United States

Norbert Schuff, PhD, is a medical physicist and professor of radiology at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF), investigator at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and lead physicist of the Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco. A graduate of the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg, Germany, Dr. Schuff completed his thesis in molecular physics at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research before working as a researcher for several leading medical imaging companies where he specialized in the development high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, including development of an MRI microscope. Since switching to an academic carrier in the mid 90s, Dr. Schuff’s research interests have focused on the development of improved MRI methods to study the aging brain and on the detection of imaging markers for neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Schuff has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and 25 book chapters. His research has been funded by the National Institute of Health, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Department of Defense. His awards include a research fellowship from the National Polish Academy of Science and the Friedrich Merz Foundation visiting professorship in Neuroradiology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. In collaboration with the neurologists Drs. William J Marks, Gail A. Kang, and Graham A. Glass, Dr. Schuff has been investigating the application of magnetic-resonance based neuroimaging techniques for the diagnosis and characterization of Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders.
