The physiological mechanisms and treatment of fatigue in PD - a longitudinal study

Fatigue is a common problem in Parkinson's and many patients continue to be bothered by fatigue despite that they are taking medications to control their motor symptoms. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) activates the brain painlessly and allows us to understand how PD affects brain function. This project will use TMS to investigate the mechanism of fatigue as PD worsens over time and to see if repetitive TMS will modify the severity of fatigue. The findings of this study will improve our understanding of fatigue in PD and will help us to develop effective treatment.

Final Outcome

Dr. Lou analyzed the neurophysiological mechanisms of PD-related fatigue, including how the brain responds after exercise. He determined that rTMS did not significantly improve fatigue in patients with Parkinson’s.
