Jose Venero , PhD
Professor of Biochemistry at University of Seville
Location: Seville, Spain
Dr. Jose L. Venero received his degree in pharmacy in 1986 and received his PhD in 1990 in the University of Seville, Spain. He joined Franz Hefti lab at the Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of Southern California to complete his postdoctoral training. At that time (1992-1993) he tested neuroprotective properties of neurotrophins, particularly NGF and BDNF in different models of neurodegeneration. Dr. Venero is tenured Professor of Biochemistry in the University of Seville. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal Neurochemistry. During the last years, his research has been mostly devoted to elucidating neurochemical and molecular bases of neurodegeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system, especially under conditions of neuroinflammation. His research group has recently joined the Institute of Biomedicine in Seville, which has been created to carry out top-level basic and clinical research on different fields, including neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Venero has been awarded several research projects funded by governmental and regional agencies to study the molecular basis of Parkinson´s disease under conditions of inflammation. He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed primary and review articles mostly related to the neurodegeneration field.
